Heat Recovery Steam Generators & Waste Heat Recovery Boilers

Heat recovery boilers, generally known by the acronym HRSG (heat recovery steam generator), utilize the heat from flue gases originating from a gas turbine, a gas engine, or fuel oil, whereas WHRB (waste heat recovery boiler) utilize gases from any industrial process. Both types of boilers are used for the generation of saturated and/or superheated steam, or for heating a thermal fluid.

Our boilers are custom-designed and tailored to meet the client’s needs, such as production, implementation, use of clean or dirty gases, and the possibility of installing equipment in classified areas.

The final decision on the utilization of the steam produced by the boilers depends on the needs of our clients; it can be used for cogeneration (electricity and heat) or trigeneration (electricity, heat, and cooling).

How Are Heat Recovery Steam Generator and Waste Heat Recovery Boilers Designed?

The main components of a water-tube heat recovery boiler designed by AITESA, whether HRSG or WHRB, are

  • Economizer This is a heat exchanger that recovers part of the heat from the combustion emitted by a boiler, turbine, or engine by heating the feed water or thermal fluid. The fluid gets heated to a temperature close to that of saturated liquid.
  • Cold Water Heat Exchangers are characterized by working with cold water that produces the condensation of the water contained in the combustion gases. These units must be made of stainless steel to prevent corrosion.
  • Superheater is a heat exchanger that increases the temperature of the saturated steam, transforming it into superheated steam. This equipment receives saturated steam from the upper part of the steam drum and is located in the initial stages of the flue gases circuit when these gases are at their highest temperature.
  • Vaporisers are heat exchangers that generate steam by utilizing the energy contained in the flue gases from the boiler, engine, or turbine.
  • Deareator remove oxygen and non-condensable gases dissolved in the boiler feed water. It uses part of the steam produced or from the plant to save on the chemicals required in a dosing system.
  • Steam Drum is a pressure vessel typically located at the highest point of the boiler, where the separation of steam from the water-steam mixture coming from the vaporizer occurs.

Our boilers can be equipped with automatic cleaning systems for dirty gases, such as washing ramps or steam or compressed air blowers, which can be used without having to shut down the boiler.

We perform optimized designs for each turbine, engine, incinerator, or furnace, adapting the design to the client’s steam needs, capable of superheating plant-saturated steam and generating it simultaneously.

What type of Heat Recovery Boilers are designed at AITESA?

We specialize in water-tube boilers with or without post-combustion:

  • Natural Circulation (with vertical tubes).
  • Forced Circulation (with horizontal tubes).

HRSG

Heat recovery steam generator for “clean” flue gases, such as those from a natural gas turbine or engine.

WHRB

Heat recovery boiler for “dirty” flue gases, such as those from a fuel-oil engine.

These boilers usually include an in-line cleaning system (grit blasting system) to keep the heat exchange surfaces clean and prevent fouling, which can reduce steam production and increase flue gas pressure drop above the design value.
